January is the month where resolutions are made and families sit down to determine their health goals for the year, whether that be healthier eating, portion control - or trying new, health-conscious practices. For 2016, Ash Edwards of Mountain State Maternity wanted to start the year off by interviewing local resources that could benefit our clients, whether they be trying to get pregnant, already pregnant, or recently postpartum. This series will flow throughout the year as these hidden gems in North Central WV are discovered.
First in the series, I had the great pleasure to speak with Stacy Roman of Roman's Acupuncture and Wellness in Morgantown. I've often heard of how amazing her clinic is, and overall how helpful acupuncture is for so many varied ailments, so I thought it'd be a great starting point for uncovering a helpful resource in starting the new year out right. Based on my own research alone, acupuncture can help with sleeplessness, pain, weight loss, energy, fertility and a few common pregnancy ailments.
I can honestly say that I was so excited to speak with Stacy when she called me back about this blog, and even more excited to get the tour of her clinic. When you walk in the front doors, the energy is amazing and it feels so serenely peaceful, and she has so much to offer in the way of holistic treatments that I found myself intrigued. Despite the impending snow storm of last week, she carved out some time for us to answer these questions about acupuncture for fertility, pregnancy and postpartum.
What is acupuncture?
"A system of complementary medicine that involves pricking the skin or tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Originating in ancient China, acupuncture is now widely practiced in the West."
How can it assist with fertility?
"Depending on the problems with either the female or male or both, we work to help with regulating the cycle, improving egg quality, balancing the hormones, decreasing stress and helping the lining of the uterus. For males we can help address stress and improve the sperm count and movement."
Is it safe during pregnancy?
"Yes, we can even work with high risk pregnancies."
What conditions or ailments in pregnancy can it help with?
"Everything from morning sickness to flipping a breech baby!"
How does it work with the body?
"We are always trying to achieve balance for the body so it can become healthier."
When should I start?
"When you know you want to try to have a baby!"
How often should I expect to come?
"If you are trying to get pregnant, you come in one time per week . If you are already pregnant, then it depends on how far along you are and if you are having any problems."
Can acupuncture be used as an alternative to medical induction?
"Yes, there is a protocol for induction."
Is it true that acupuncture can be used during labor as a pain management technique?
"Yes, it helps lower the pain and helps with dilation, plus improves focus."
Should I continue acupuncture after my birth?
"Yes, and the baby can, too if there are any issues." (This was super intriguing for me, and Stacy went on to explain that they do have needle-free acupuncture for children! How cool is that?)
What can it help with during the postpartum period?
"Lactation, depression, and just about anything - plus it is nice to have the quiet time!"
As with any new practice, it's important to listen to your body. Every case is different and results may vary from person to person. Contact Stacy to discuss your options with acupuncture - with more than 17 years experience under her belt, she can steer you in the right direction!
