Postpartum Doulas Do What?

It's day two of World Doula Week! For our second blog challenge, we're going to talk about what postpartum doulas do. If you search Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #postpartumdoulasdothat, you'll see multiple ways that a doula can support the family in the postpartum period. But since you're reading here, let's go over a few awesome ways we can ease that after baby transition.

You just got home from the hospital, you're so glad to be in your own space again, and now you have the smallest of bundles tagging along to complete your home.

You might feel like you should be doing something, like cleaning up or cooking something, but you didn't get much sleep in the maternity ward and now you're exhausted, and all you really want to do is cuddle that baby.

Fast forward a few days or weeks, and you're still tired because the baby is going through a growth spurt and it seems like they're up every hour to feed, and you just. want. to. shower. in. peace.

Cue - the postpartum doula.

When I first started doula'ing, I heard it referred to as offering Unicorn Rides by one of the most amazing postpartum doulas. (Seriously. Why can't she be here?! I'd have killed for a Mama's Best Friend during the postpartum period!) I think that's a fabulous analogy, but I'd go so far as to even call postpartum doulas fairy godmothers because they're downright magical.

Here's why:

Parenthood can be hard. It's exhausting, it's messy, and it's an experience from which we all must grow. This can mean a lot of long nights, a lot of thinking and rethinking our choices, and a lot - and I do mean a lot - of dirty diapers. When you hire a postpartum doula, we can help you establish a routine that works for your family, and give you the peace of mind knowing that your household will be taken care of day and night.

So how do we do that?

Do you want to stay in bed and snuggle your new baby all day, but the house needs groceries? We've got you covered, just give us a list. Do you need nutritious meals and snacks planned and prepped? Consider it done. How about a little light laundry? Sounds like a plan! And while I'm doing that, why don't you go take a nice, long shower (with warm water!) or a luxurious nap? I promise we won't let your household fall apart.

That doesn't even cover what overnight postpartum doula care could look like. Imagine sleeping without your monitor glued to your face, being pulled awake by the sounds of a hungry infant the minute your head hits the pillow. If you're breastfeeding, we can bring the baby to you, or if you're bottle feeding, just keep on sleeping! Both partners wake up rested and ready to face the day, with breakfast made and the clean-up taken care of.

Doesn't that sound amazing?

On a more serious note, postpartum doulas are also there to help you out with other things, as well. If you're struggling with breastfeeding, we'll be there to lend our expertise, or know when to refer you out to a more qualified professional. If you're struggling to bond with baby, or feel yourself getting depressed beyond the normal baby blues, we can lend an ear, validate your feelings, and help you decide when you should seek help. Your postpartum doula is an invaluable resource that helps you get your life into a new routine without sacrificing the small stuff - and the big.
